Ocean City Beach Weddings: Preserving a Shoreline Day

Ocean City is Maryland's classic beach town, with a long boardwalk, wide sand and a lively summer season. Beach ceremonies, elopements and micro-weddings are popular here, and the best of them are simple. A little planning and a good keepsake keep the memories whole.

Beach ceremonies and the rules

A ceremony on the sand has an easy appeal, but you need to know whose sand it is. Ocean City's beach is town property, so a ceremony there goes through the Town of Ocean City and its rules on guest numbers, setups and amplified sound. Assateague Island, just south, is a national seashore run by the National Park Service with an entirely separate process. Confirm which authority applies early, keep the permit or confirmation email, and share it with your photographer and officiant.

Wind and sun matter more on a beach than anywhere else. Bring sunscreen, water and sun protection for older guests, and use weights for anything that might blow away.

Choose a location with a clear backup plan, such as a covered area or a nearby indoor space, since coastal weather shifts quickly.

Timing the season

Summer is crowded and warm. If you want a quieter beach and more availability, consider late spring or September and early October. The ocean is at its warmest in late summer and early fall, the air is milder than in July, and the boardwalk is calmer.

Sunrise and late-day ceremonies are both lovely. Midday sun can be harsh in photographs, so ask your photographer to guide you toward the soft light of early morning or the hour before sunset.

Check tide times if your ceremony will be close to the water. A wide beach at low tide gives you room to move, while high tide can leave much less sand to work with.

Micro-weddings and destination guests

A small gathering suits the shore. Ocean City is roughly a three-hour drive from both Baltimore and Washington, far enough that most guests will stay over, and a long weekend turns the wedding into a family holiday.

That shape suits a magazine especially well. A 20-page book at $70 captures a small gallery and can be mailed to the relatives who could not attend. Because the group is small, there is time for a proper group portrait of everyone, which is worth a page of its own.

Beach days are long and sandy, so bring flip-flops for guests, a small towel and a shaded spot for elders. Comfortable guests make for natural smiles.

Capturing the shoreline

Ask your photographer to include scenes beyond the ceremony: footprints on the sand, the boardwalk lights, a post-ceremony walk, a seafood dinner. These images turn a collection of portraits into a story with a sense of place. A spread of the travelers is worth considering too: the family who drove in and the friends who stayed for the weekend.

Lay-flat binding is the natural choice for a beach panorama, since the pages open completely flat and a horizon can stretch across both sides. Albums come in 12×24, 16×24, 15×30 and 20×30 inches.

Include a few close-ups of the details that make the day yours, such as rings in the sand, a shell on the table or a pair of shoes at the edge of the water.

Questions

Do I need a permit for a beach wedding in Ocean City?

Most likely yes. Ocean City's beach is town property, so you apply to the town, while Assateague Island to the south is a national seashore with a separate process. Confirm which one applies well ahead of your date.

What is the best time for beach photos?

Early morning and the hour before sunset give soft, flattering light. Midday sun is harsher.
